EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
FOR U-HAUL SITE CLEANUP PROGRAM
U-HAUL STORE #709-50
2701 NORTH WILSON WAY
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA 95205
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY SITE CODE: 1772
.July 9, 2007
U-Haul International/Amerco Real Estate Company (U-Haul) owns and occupies the property
located at 2701 North Wilson Way in Stockton, California and currently uses the site as a U-Haul
vehicle and equipment rental facility. The site was formerly used as a retail facility that operated
four underground storage tanks that stored gasoline. Some of the gasoline tanks and dispenser
piping leaked gasoline during operation and resulted in impacted soil and groundwater beneath
the site.
A program to clean the soil and groundwater beneath the U-Haul site is tentatively approved by
the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, pending public notification. The
cleanup program will consist of air injection as the groundwater cleanup method and air removal
as the soil cleanup method. The groundwater cleanup will be accomplished by injecting air
beneath the groundwater surface which will bubble its way upward through the water and strip
out the leaked gasoline from the water. The soil cleanup will be accomplished by removing air
containing gasoline vapors from the soil beneath the site and destroying the gasoline vapors
inside a treatment system monitored by the Air Pollution Control District. The results of this
cleanup program will be clean soil and groundwater beneath the site and clean air released to the
atmosphere through the treatment system.
The installation of the treatment system at the site will take an estimated six months. The
treatment system will begin operation at the site in early 2008 and operate for an estimated 24
months following installation. All activities associated with the cleanup program will be confined
to the U-Haul site and will not impact any neighboring properties (with the possible exception of
intermittent construction noise during business hours while the treatment system is being
installed). The site will continue to be operated as a U-Haul vehicle and equipment rental facility
during and after the cleanup program.
