Blaeg Environmental Management Inc 4th Qtr 2003 Groundwater Monitoring Report
002-70950-04
U-Haul#709-So
Groundwater measurements from U-Haul's "B" well casings, in addition to groundwater measurements
provided by GZA for the Former Harry's Auto Mart monitoring wells, were used to derive a
groundwater gradient map illustrating groundwater conditions at both sites The average groundwater
flow direction across the U-Haul site using the December 8, 2003 data from the U-Haul "B"well casings
appears to be vary from the northwest to the northeast at an average gradient of 0 0003 The pumping of
Ithe domestic well appears to be effecting the local groundwater gradient of the southern portion of the
site where the groundwater flow direction varies from southwest to southeast toward the domestic well at
an average gradient of 0 0003 (Figure 3) A groundwater gradient map was not generated for the "C"
horizon since all screened intervals in the "C" wells were submerged
In addition to water level depths, Blaes Environmental also measured dissolved oxygen levels from
selected well casings using a YSI-95 dissolved oxygen meter The method for measuring dissolved
oxygen content of groundwater is described in Appendix B The results indicated that dissolved oxygen
levels during this monitoring event ranged from 0 3% in well MW-1B to 40 1% in well MW-I IC
(Table 2)
3 2 GROUNDWATER SAMPLING—DECEMBER 2003
On December 8, 9, 10 and 11, 2003, Blaes Environmental collected 17 groundwater samples from the
on-site and off-site monitoring wells that contained water The groundwater levels at the time were
below the well screen and did not allow for sampling of any ofU-Haul's "A" casing wells
Groundwater sample collection involved purging approximately three well volumes of groundwater from
each well and allowing the wells to recharge before sample collection Purging was performed during
this event either by hand bailing or pumping water from the well casings, dependent on the volume of
water in the well The bailer used for purging during this sampling event was a 1&7/8-inch diameter by
3-foot long bailer Blaes Environmental utilized a 2"Grundfos "Reda-flo" submersible pump for purging
by pumping The bailers and pump were decontaminated before and after purging each well with a
Iiquid detergent wash (Liquinox®) and a tap-water rinse Periodic parameter readings were recorded on
the field data sheets included in Appendix A The groundwater purging procedures are presented in
I
I 7
