' U-Haul#709-50
Additional Site Charactenzation Maes Environmental
3.
DDI I NAL CHARACTERIZATION PRQCRAM
The additional characterization program consisted of soil sample collection, groundwater well installation
and groundwater sampling Blaes Environmental used direct-push and cone-penetrometer soil sampling
methods at six soil borehole locations to further define the extent of hydrocarbon Y impacted soil Eight
additional groundwater monitoring wells were installed to better define the extent of dissolved-phase
hydrocarbons beneath the site The locations of the soil borings and monitonng wells are shown on Figure
The following sections describe the specific tasks of the additional characterization program
4
' 3 I HEALTH A_ . AFETY EETINQ
Blaes Environmental conducted a health and safety meeting at the site pnor to initiating field activities
Attendees at the meeting included Blaes Environmental personnel and the three members of the drilling
crew Dunng the meeting, the Health& Safety Plan was reviewed and discussed by all personnel The field
program was conducted in strict adherence with the provisions described in the Health & Safety Plan
A copy of the Health& Safety Plan is included as Appendix C
32 I E , T 1 ATI N SQIL
1 Although previous investigations conducted by Applied Consultants in 1993 indicated that hydrocarbons in
soil extended to the groundwater surface (approximately 75 feet bgs at the time), PHS-EHD requested
' additional assessment to define the vertical extent of impacted soil to the depth of the historical Iow
groundwater level during operation of the USTs at the site This level was estimated to be at approximately
90 feet bgs Blacs Environmental sampled the additional soil boreholes to a maximum depth of 126 feet
t bgs A description of field activities and rationale are presented below
32 1 trect Pushl . ne-Penetrometer Soil SW limon
The investigation conducted by BIaes Environmental involved collecting soil samples within saturated soil
to 126 feet bgs or approximately 77 feet below the groundwater interface Direct-push and cone-
penetrometer soil sampling technology were determined to be the best methods for preserving soil sample
r integrity when sampling this far below groundwater Both methods use sealed(before sampling) split-spoon
soil samplers with brass sleeves Various diameter split-spoon samplers were used during the soil sampling
program Each sampler and brass sleeves were decontaminated prior to sampling
8
