• <br /> ATTACHMENT 5 <br /> GENERALLY ACCEPTED SAFE WORK PRACTICES <br /> 1 0 RE U1RED PRACTICES <br /> Blaes Environmental personnel and subcontractors working at the site (Field Team Members) shall take the <br /> following precautions when performing field activities <br /> E 1 Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking, and/oi any practice that increases the probability of <br /> hand-to-mouth transfer and ingestion of matei ial is prohibited in any area designated contaminated <br /> 1 2 Hands and face must be thoroughly washed upon leaving contaminated areas and befoic eating, drinking, or <br /> any other activities <br /> 1 3 Whenever decontamination procedures for outer garments are in effect, the entire body should be <br /> thoroughly washed as soon as possible after the protective garment is removed <br /> 1 4 No excessive facial hair, which interferes with a satisfactory fit of the mask-to-face seal, is allowed on Field <br /> Team Members required to wear respiratory protection equipment <br /> 1 5 Contact with contaminated surfaces or with surfaces suspected of being contaminated should be avoided <br /> Whenever possible,Field Team Members should not walk through puddles, mud, or other discolored <br /> surfaces, kneel on the ground, lean, sit, or place equipment on drums, containers, vehicles, or the ground <br /> 1 6 Medicine and alcohol can inciease the effects fti7m eXposuie to toric chemicals If piesciibed dings are <br /> tequried by a Field Team Membet, then site work shall be piohibited If theie is any likelihood of such <br /> increase, consult a physician <br /> 1 7 Field Team Members and equipment in the contaminated area should be minimized, consistent with <br /> effective site operations <br /> 1 8 Work areas for various operational activities must be established <br /> 1 9 Ptocedures for leaving a contaminated area must be planned and implemented priot to going to the site <br /> Work areas and decontamination procedures must be established on the basis of prevailing site conditions <br /> 1 10 Field Team Members must compensate for the increased heat stress caused by wearing protective clothing <br /> in order to prevent heat-induced illnesses Field Team Members must maintain appropriate work-rest <br /> periods ensuring that their fluid and electrolyte balances are sufficient <br /> 1 11 As temperatures drop, additional attention must be paid to the possibility of cold related stress Even when <br /> ambient temperatures are as warm as 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit, hypothermia can become a significant <br /> factor at a site As the temperature falls further, the potential hazard increases It is therefore important that <br /> Field Team Members be aware of the signs and symptoms of cold stress disorders so that timely first aid <br /> can be administered <br /> 1 12 Devises to provide appropriate eye protection must be worn during any field activity where the danger of <br /> eye injuryexists All protective eye wear shall meet requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment <br /> Program. <br /> • 1 13 Personal Hygiene is of importance in controlling exposure All Field Team Members shall wash an affected <br /> area unmediately after obvious contact with a hazardous substance, report the incident to the Field Team <br /> Leader or SHSO, and seek medical care or testing, if appropriate <br /> Page 8 of 8 <br />
