John Alaniz [EH]
From: Azevedo, Steve <Steve.Azevedo@kniferiver.com>
Sent: Friday, October 12, 2018 1:14 PM
To: John Alaniz [EH]
Cc: Coleman, Lance
Subject: RE: questions on waste
John,
Sorry for the delay. Please see our response below. We will be sending you a status update on all items shortly.
Steve Azevedo
From:John Alaniz [EH] [mailto:jalanizl@sjcehd.com]
Sent:Tuesday, October 9, 2018 4:03 PM
To: Coleman, Lance<Lance.Coleman@pacificnorthwestoil.com>
Cc:Azevedo, Steve<Steve.Azevedo@kniferiver.com>
Subject: questions on waste
** WARNING: EXTERNAL SENDER. DO NOT provide your user ID or password on sites or forms linked from this email. **
Hello Lance,
I had a couple of follow up questions regarding the asphalt and the butanol latex.
For the asphalt:
You mentioned that there is some non-recoverable asphalt that gets taken to Forward Landfill as a designated waste.
What makes the asphalt non-recoverable? This material comes from drippings from trucks, truck maintenance, and
general yard cleanup. There is no asphalt plant at this site where it can be recycled into an asphalt concrete mix. Once
the asphalt cement becomes contaminated with soil, rocks, fabric, etc.,we can longer use it at this facility.
Why does it have to be taken out as a designated waste? We ship this out as a special waste since we do not want to
put this material in the regular trash and since we want to let the landfill know the contents.
Was any testing done on the asphalt for the waste profile? No
How much waste asphalt is generated a month?Varies up to 20-30 cubic yards per year.
For the butanol latex:
As discussed over the phone, the determination has to be made at the point of generation. There are some concerns
with the material before it is dried out. The SDS does not appear to be a complete hazardous waste determination (ie:
fish toxicity was not covered).
How was a complete waste determination made? Due to the cost of performing a fish bioassay relative to the disposal
cost, we now plan to ship this off as hazardous waste.
Is there material added to the product before it is used or becomes a waste? It is mixed with asphalt before it is
used. Nothing is added prior to becoming a waste.
How much butanol latex waste is generated per month? 5 pounds on average. We did not use any this year. What you
witnessed is what we cleaned out of the tank and totes when is basically solidifies.
Thank You
John Alaniz
i
