The t ackground concentrations are measured
in a location upwind and removed as possible fro sources of organic vapors on the site.
When background concentrations of organic vapors register as "0.0" on the PID, subsequent
readings of "0.0" registered from samples tested in the field are recorded as "ND" (not
r detected). When background concentrations of organic vapors register at some quantity
above "0.0", subsequent readings registered from sa ples tested in the field at or below this
value are recorded as "B/G" (background).
A-6 Standard Operating Procedures for Performing Head Space Analysis. Head space
analysis is performed using a photoionization de ector (PID) or a drager tube. A soil
sample is placed in a sealed glass container or pla itic bag, agitated, and placed in a warm
'-` atmosphere. After approximately 15 minutes, whi h is generally sufficient for some of the
volatiles to escape from the soil, the PID probe or tip of the drager tube is inserted into the
' container or bag and air above the sample is puniped into the PID or drager tube. The
highest concentration of organic vapors recorded by the PID or the drager tube reading will
Fbe recorded.
F
F
w
G. 1
C
F!
I '
