11
• Air monitoring for background levels of air contamination upwind of the project will be
performed prior to the start of excavation activities. Monitoring with the OVM will be
conducted a minimum of every 60 minutes. At any time the OVM reading shows a sustained
concentration greater than 50 ppm, air-punfying respirators will be worn by all personnel at that-
work location. If at any time during field activities, the OVM readings at the breathing zone-
reaches or exceeds 100 ppm, work will be discontinued and field personnel will move away
form the area until lower organic vapor readings are obtained. If OVM readings indicate
consistent organic vapor concentrations greater that 100 ppm, then work will stop and the level
of PPE will be re-evaluated.
Heat stress and noise will be monitored as described in the hazard analysis portion of this SSHP.
N=ICAL SURVEILLANCE REQUMEMIENTS
Medical surveillance is conducted as a routine program for BC field staff which meets the
requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 (f). There will not be any special medical tests or
examinations required for staff involved in this project.
All subcontractor personnel directly involved with the fieldwork must also meet the medical
• surveillance requirements of 1910.120.
SITE CONTROL NOFASURES
This section describes the general facilities and site-specific control measures for this project.
The potential chemical and physical hazards have been identified in this SSHP; however, should
unexpected conditions arise, the SSO will stop all work at the site and notify the PM and HSD.
Work will not resume until the SSHP and working conditions have been reevaluated and the
SSHP revised accordingly.
Work zones including exclusion area, decontamination area, and support area, will be established
at the site for each drilling location.
Communication between field team members will be verbal.
A map of each site in the BC - E-Z Serve Northern California Program is included in
Appendix A. The nearest medical assistance for each site is outlined in Appendix B.
Work Practices
Safe work practices are part of assunng a safe and healthful working environment. These
. practices are standardized for all field activities, and it is the responsibility of BC employees to
follow safe work practices when conducting field activities. Safe work practices to be employed _
during the entire progress of fieldwork are as follows:
