It is important
personnel associated with industrial laundry operations; especially within maintenance or
wastewater departments are properly trained on how to respond in the event of a spill or
release of chemicals. Preventive measures are important and personnel should understand how
effective best management practice (BMP) procedures can be used for all process operations to
reduce the risk of potential spills or discharges to the environment, storm water system or
sanitary sewer. Refer to the following BMP guidelines when training employees at your facility.
• Do not pour or dispose of any chemicals directly down any drain, sanitary sewer or
storm sewer.
• All process wastewater generated at the facility must be directed to the wastewater
treatment system ONLY.
• Store all chemicals in original containers within proper spill containment (such as within
bermed areas or on spill containment pallets).
• Routinely inspect equipment, containment, and chemical storage areas for signs of
damage or leaks. Take corrective action if repairs are needed in order to prevent
releases to the environment, storm water system or sanitary sewer.
• Ensure "Safe-Drain" system for storm drain remains closed and only opened during
precipitation events. Immediately close "Safe-Drain" system upon completion of
precipitation events.
• ONLY uncontaminated storm water is allowed to be discharged to the storm water
system.
