Hazelton Avenue
P. 0. Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Attention: Diane Hinson
Re: San Joaquin County Motor Pool , 444 S. Wilson Way, Stockton, CA
On May 18, 1988 and May 23, 1988, Jim Thorpe Oil , Inc. , in the presence of
San Joaquin Local Health District representative, removed four (4) underground
waste oil tanks at the above location. Soil samples were taken by Canonie Environ-
mental Services. The samples were labeled #4, #5, 6-1 S, 6-2 N, WO-West, and WO-East
and were tested as seen in the two attached soil analysis reports.
Health District officials showed concern in the #5 tank excavation. Mainly
because of discoloration, petroleum odor, and general appearance of the soil . This
tank was used by the automotive shop personnel for disposal of used oil . However,
the shop steam cleaner is located immediately south of the tank and residuals from
the steam cleaning operations may have leached in and around said tank through cracks
in the concrete surrounding the area in question.
Samples WO-West and WO-East showed high levels of lead and total extractable
petroleum hydrocarbons.
Please see attached layout showing locations of the tanks in question and
nearest water well .
At this time we are requesting further excavating and resampling at both sites
as to hopefully clean up contaminated soil . Under your supervision we will :
1 . Excavate to a depth of 18-20 feet, placing all excavated soil on 6 mil
plastic and cover.
2. Take two (2) samples at the bottom of each excavation, along with any
side samples deemed necessary and two (2) samples from each pile of the
excavated soil ,
3. The excavated areas will be barricaded.
4. A 24-hour turn around on the samples will be requested. All samples will
be tested for: TEPH, Total Lead, and BTX.
Respectfully submitted,
JIM THORPE 0 L, INC.
i Vice= resident
MT/tkt
enclosures
cc: San Joaquin County, Purchasing Dept.
