I
KLEINFELDER
i
QUALITATIVE FIELD SCREENING
A Foxboro flame ionization detector (FID) will be used to screen representative soil from
I the sampled interval. The FID measures total hydrocarbon compounds in air in parts per
t million by volume (ppmv). Calibration will be performed prior to use in the field. The
FID field screening of-the soil samples should provide. a qualitative indication of the
presence of petroleum hydrocarbons.
Sample Selection and Analysis
Soil samples will be selected for chemical analysis as follows: r)
Analysis Samples/Tank Site
TPH
Oil and Grease
BTEX 6
Method 8240 1
ICP for Pb, Cr, Cd, Zn 1
Method 8270 for PCBs, PNAs, PCPs,Creosote 1
All samples will be handled under strict chain-of-custody procedures. Total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) will be analyzed by extractable GC/FID method; oil and grease by
gravimetric method; and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene by EPA Method 8020.
I The metals will be analyzed by inductively coupled argon plasma spectrometer.
' Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polynuclear aromatics (PNAs), pentachlorophenol (PCP), and
creosote will be by EPA Method 8270. The above methods"of analysis are appropriate
methods of analysis for suspected waste oil contamination as`presented in the Regional i
Water Quality Control Board's LUFT Manual: This manual can be used as a guideline by
state and local agencies when reviewing soil and ground water investigations.
Implementation
Upon approval of this Site Assessment Work Plan by SJLHD, Kleinfelder will implement
the plan. This implementation will commence within three weeks of SJLHD approval and
is planned to take 20 days.
Report of Findings t
Upon receipt of the analytical results, a report will be prepared for agency submittal. The
report will present the field and laboratory findings, and"copies`of the boring logs. The
lateral and vertical extent of contamination will be evaluated and remedial options
screened.
ASSUMPTIONS AND CLIENT RESPONSIBILITIES
o The only areas to be assessed at this time are two waste oil tank areas.
o . Adequate work space and access will be provided which will include tree
removal at the former tank location near the tire shop. Removal to be by
San Joaquin County.
i
f
170-89-387 2
