- 2 BACKGROUND
The San Joaquin County Motor Pool is located at 444 South Wilson Way, Stockton,
California(Plate 1, Vicinity Map). The facility operated two underground waste oil storage
, t
tanks at two locations on the site. A 1000 gallon tank was located south of the tire shop
and a 500 gallon tank was located north of the auto repair shop. The locations of the tanks
and buildings are shown on the Site Plan,Plate 2.
1 3
The two waste oil storage tanks were excavated and removed in May, 1988. The 500-gallon
tank excavation was backfilled to grade and the 1000-gallon tank excavation was partially
s, backfilled. During the tank removal, two soil samples were collected from the bottom of
each tank excavation and submitted for chemical analysis. Samples were collected at a
detank excavation, and at a depth of 16 feet from the
1000-gallon tank excavation. A total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) extractable was
~W detected at 26 m k ;n one of the t,,rro samples collected from the 500-gallon tank
" excavation, and TPH conc ntrations of20 and 320 mg/kg were detected in the two
samples coil acted from.the tank excavation. Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene,
and xylene (BTEX); polychlorinated biphenvis (PCBs); and purgeabie halocarbons were
not detected in samples collected from both excavations
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division requested
additional assessment of the extent of possible contamination. San Joaquin County
Department of General Services retained Kleinfelder to conduct a limited soil assessment .
investigation to evaluate the lateral and vertical extent of soil contamination in the vicinity
of the former wast oil tanks. A work plan to conduct the assessment was submitted to
Public Health Service in April, 1989. The work- plan was revised to address Public Health
Service's comments and an approved boring permit was received on July 28, 1989.
Kleinfelder conducted a field investigation to further assess the extent of contamination in
--November 798y.-This report describes Elie field activities and analytical results associated
with the soil assessment investigation.
4,
241-89-2196 2
