1
File No 20-1008-52 A03
June 27, 1994
' protection for the affected crew members This requirement is included in the complete field
health and safety plan developed for the project prior to the start of field work
1 A-2.3 Collection of Soil Samples
Soil samples are collected approximately every 5 feet for field screening and logging
Samples are collected by advancing the boring to a point immediately above the desired
sampling depth and then driving (vertical borings) or pushing (slant borings) a Modified
' California Sampler, lined with three brass tubes, into the undisturbed soil The sampler is
then removed from the bottom of the boring The ends of the bottom (third) tube are covered
with Teflon and sealed with tight fitting plastic caps
Each sample as individually labeled The label includes Klemfelder's name, lob number, the
date and tune the sample was collected, the employee number of the individual who
performed the sampling, and a unique five-digit sample identification number A custody seal
may be placed on the sample in such a way that any attempt to tamper with the sample is
easily visible
' A-2.4 Sample Handling
' After labeling, the sample is immediately stored in an iced cooler for transport to
Klemfelder's office sample control or to the analytical laboratory A Klernfelder
' cham-of-custody foram accompanies the cooler The chars-of-custody form includes
Kleuifelder's name, address and telephone number, the employee number of the individual
who performed the sampling, the sample numbers, the date and time the samples were
' collected, the number of containers each sample occupies, and the analyses for which the
samples are being submitted, if any The cham-of-custody form is signed by each person
who handles the samples, including all Kleunfelder employees and the receiving employee of
' office sample control or the analytical laboratory when the samples are delivered
A-2.5 Decontamination of Equipment
' To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, augers and associated equipment are steam
cleaned prior to drilling each boring In addition, sampling equipment is cleaned with a
trisodium-phosphate wash and rinsed with distilled water prior to collecting each soil sample
ETH and 10/94
' Copyright 1994 Kleinfelder, Inc Page 2 of
