LM
LEEp$HILL HERKENHOFF, INC
PROJECT SITE BACKGROUND
2.1 Site Information
The project site is located at 102 South Wilson Way in Stockton, California (see
Figure 1) According to a permit application filed with Stockton City Hall , four
fuel tanks from a former service station were removed from the site in late 1978.
Two 7,500-gallon tanks were located in the center of the site, and one 300-gallon
tank and one 1000-gallon tank were located at the southern end of the site (see
Figure 2) . It is not known how long these tanks were utilized by the service
station; however, information from the San Joaquin County Recorder's office
indicates that the site has been a service station since at least the early
1930's. This information is presented in Appendix C.
In 1936 the property was purchased by Giuseppe and Angela Caffese from Oil
Products Company, Ltd. Included in this purchase was the land as well as all
equipment, fixtures, gasoline pumps and all other personal property located at
the premises upon which Oil Products Company conducted a gasoline and service
station business at the southeast corner of Wilson Way and Market Street. Two
550-gallon underground gasoline storage tanks were located on the property
In 1947 the property was sold to Harold and Dena Knowles. The site became the
Knowles Gas Station. At that time, the following underground tanks were also
purchased: One 15,000-gallon, one 7,500-gallon, one 1,000-gallon, and four 550
IP gallon. It is not known whether any or all of these tanks were installed at this
site.
The site was then sold in 1977 to Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company. In late 1978 four
underground storage tanks were excavated and removed from the site. Information
regarding disposal of the tanks and/or excavated material is not available It
is believed that the site was then paved and used as a parking area by Pepsi
until 1985 when the site was purchased by the Roek Brothers. To date the site
remains vacant.
Presently, the site is surrounded by a chain-link fence except for the southern
fifteen feet of the property and the western ten feet of the property (see
Figure 2) . An approximately four foot deep excavation exists near the center
of the property, covering an area of approximately 350 square feet. The excavated
soil remains stockpiled on the eastern side of the property The property is
paved with asphalt. A 6-inch sanitary sewer line runs parallel to Upson Way
approximately three feet east of the western property line. Two operating
service stations are located within 100 feet of the site. West of the site, on
the opposite side of Milson tray is a Texaco station. An ARCO station neighbors
the site to the south.
202 Previous $nvestigations
In May of 1987, BCA prepared a report entitled, "Hydrocarbon Evaluation Study
for Arco Aft/PH Facility, Ui l son Uay and tilash i ngton Street, Stockton, California.
