1
LMLEEDSNILL HERKENHOFF, INC September 1990
Table 3 also shows that 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA) was detected in the latest sampling of
MW6 and MW4 (these compounds were not previously tested for). A trace concentration
rof 1,2-dichloropropane was also detected in MW6 in the latest sampling It is highly
detected in MW6 in the latest sampling.
I1,2-dichloroethane is an organic compound which was used in the manufacturing of
tetraethyllead (leaded gasoline). It is also a constituent in varnish and finish removers and
metal degreasers The California Department of Health Services (DOHS) has established
an MCL (maximum contaminant level) of 0.5 ppb in drinking water supplied to the public
1,2-dichloropropane is used as an antiknocking additive for gasoline, and is also
contained in solvents There is no established MCL for this compound
It is highly unlikely that the presence of these constituents in the groundwater beneath this
site is related to an unauthorized release of these compounds at his particular site
because analysis of soil samples collected previously by Balbi & Chang from both TB4,
located in the northwest corner of the property and from monitoring wells 1,2, and 3,
indicated no detectable concentrations of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons, including
DCA and dichloropropane. A copy of the laboratory analysis sheets is included in
Appendix D
Depth to groundwater measurements have been collected by LH at the project site since
July of 1989 Water level data indicate that the groundwater is generally flowing in an
easterly direction at a relatively flat gradient varying from 0 2 to 0.5 percent. The most
recent data collected on August 15, 1990, has groundwater flowing in approximately a
I northeasterly direction. Groundwater contour maps have been developed for the site
from the measured groundwater level data and are included in Appendix C of this report
14
