Task 1: Preliminar Desi nnEngineerinq
A soil vapor survey has been conducted using the
Photovac PID probe. The PID delineated areas
` volatile organic cof high
ompound concentration (target areas)
within the selected site (Figure 2) . In addition, soil
sampling and analyses were also conducted. As part of the
previous program, the occurrence of vocs in the unsaturated
soils and/or shallow ground water in the target area has
been
andborings ein the 8target ased parea, aon the aprimarta y targetpareaurhas
been selected.
B. Task 2: Design of the u or Extraction System
As a first step i-t the design of the vapor extraction
and injection system, a series of field evaluations will be
required to calculate proper well spacing and to size the
extraction and injection blowers.
The investigation will consist of
completing a single
vapor extraction well In the vadose zone above the water
table.
During this well installation, three sail samples
Will be collected for total hydrocarbon analyses using EPA
Modified Method 8015. A series of well point piezometers
will then be installed as shown in Plate 3.
An extraction blower will then be connected to the well
and put into operation during a field test. After stability
has been reached, pressure readings will be taken at each
piezometer to ' determine the flow characteristics
through the soil matrix, of air
From these data, the design spacing of the wells,
vapor extraction quantities, and the volume of air required
EE for injection can be calculated.
t
'- Given the above information, the extraction and
injection wells will be placed in an array as shown
conceptually on Plate 4. Specific well locations will be
designed once the field test and analysis is complete and
will be shown in the design drawings.
I
