Kleinfelder & Associates was contracted by Mr. Douglas Forquer of I '
Guild Wineries and Distilleries (Guild), located at One Winemasters' Way .'
in Lodi, California (Plate 1), to investigate the soil at the facility.
An onsite round 500—gallon underground g gasoline tank had been used to fuel t
company vehicles. In 1985 the tank was excavated; the physical condition f ,
of the tank and apparent contamination in the excavated soil indicated
that the tank had leaked in the past.
To estimate the extent of ground water contamination, ground water
monitoring wells were installed in the vicinity of the excavation. The
water table was encountered at approximately 30 feet below the ground
surface. The soil in the vadose zone was determined to be predominantly a
fine to medium grained sand. Locations of the tank excavation and
monitoring wells are shown on Plate 2.
I;
Sixteen soil borings were drilled along lines radiating from the tank
excavation to estimate the extent of contamination in the unsaturated
- soil. Each soil sample p e w as screened in the field with a portable organic
vapor detection instrument calibrated with 25 or 50 ppm benzene gas.
Select soil samples were submitted for total petroleum hydrocarbon ,l
analysis. Field vapor readings ranged from 0 to 1,200 parts per million
by volume (ppmv). Total petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the soil
at concentrations ranging from 35 to 4,400 mg/Kg. Based on the field
readings and analytical results, a volume with a diameter of 40 feet and• a
deprh of 15 to 30 feet was estimated to be the limit of detectable
concentrations---ia_the.unsaturated_soil
-as._showr.-on--Flate--3.-- ------ ----...._
To assess whether or not vapor extraction technology would be a viable i!
alternative at Guild, the site conditions were compared with the optimal
41--87-137
