i$+
!. H. KLEINFELDER &ASSOCIATES
Air emissions can be controlled through vapor-phase carbon adsorption,
This may be required by regulatory agencies dependent upon emission
concentrations. In this manner, the environmental and public health are
protected from potentially harmful airborne contaminants.
[A Air stripping system effluent quality can be enhanced by liquid phase
carbon adsorption. Once the majority of hydrocarbon contamination has
been removed through air stripping, the remaining constituents can be
reduced to acceptable levels via liquid phase carbon adsorption.
f.a
COST SCREENING
The air stripping technique, as a stand-alone system, offers. relativeZy
low capital investment yet much higher O&M cost. This is primarily due to
high utility costs to operate the system_ Capital costs will increase
with higher efficiency speci€ications.
Capital and 0&h] casts increase substantially if carbon adsorption is used
to augment the air stripping system. In addition to design and
construction costs, costly periodic carbon regeneration or replacement is
f , required.
!k4. 3.6.3 CAFMON ADSORPTION
E Numerous case histories have documented carbon adsorption as an effective
Cx Y
remedial technique for the treatment of hydrocarbon contaminated ground
x water. This technique employs granular activated carbon (GAC) as a medium
a
for adsorption of VOC's (see Figure 3.6.5). The effectiveness of this
i technique depends primarily on . adsorbability of the carbon per
constituent. The adsorbability is related to the solubility of the
contaminant in water and as such decreases with increased solubility.
To ensure effective removal of most hydrocarbon constituents, several fat
least two) GAC units are constructed in-line. if breakthrough occurs in .
the first GAC unit, the next unit in line will become the prime treatment
. 33-87-887 lb
;
