second canister Each carbon canistei has been fitted with a sample poi t
which allows a sample to be collected and analyzed at prescribed intervals
to deteiinine at what point MTBE has broken thiough the first canister
ASE will replace the canisters when they no longei ate effective at
removing the MTBE from the watei The system has been designed to
always have an adequate supply of activated carbon in one vessel to treat
a nor mal volume of water while the other canistet is spent and in t h e
process of being replaced Cuitently, the schedule foi sample collection
and analysis is quaiteily (every 3 months)
WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
On Octobei 30 2001, a water sample, labeled 17883 Airpoit Way, was
collected froth the well during routine quarterly sample collection
activities The sample was placed within an ice chest containing wet ice
while ti anspor ted to Kiff Analytical of Davis, Califoinia (ELAP# 2 2 3 6)
under chain of custody procedures The sample was analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G), benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and Xylenes (collectively kno%; n as BTEX), the five fuel
oxygenates, and lead scavengers by EPA Method 8260B The sample
contained 096 parts per billion (ppb) MTBE
After the s\ item was installed, started, and opetating in late lanuai y
2002, ASE collected a water sample after treatment by the fitst GAC
canistei This sample was labeled 17883-GAC 1-01-31-02 The sample was
placed within an ice chest containing wet ice while ti anspoi ted to Kiff
under chain of custody procedures The sample was analyzed for TPH-G,
BTEX, five fuel oxygenates, and lead scavengers by EPA Method 8260B
The sample contained no detectable concentrations of any o f
the compounds analyzed. A copy of the certified analytical reports
are attached in Appendix B
WATER SAIVIPLE ANALYTLICAL RESULT
• The only compound identified in sample 17883 Aripoit Way (the pie-
treated water sample) was MTBE at 096 ppb
• No compounds were identified in sample 17883-GACl -01-31-02, which
was collected after GAC canister number 1 This proves that the
treatment system is working as designed, and that no MTBE of any
other compounds analyzed aie entering the house's plumbing system
•
