CONFIDENTIAL
BIC
Head Quarters-4900 E Dublin Granville Rd
Columbus, OH 43081
LOTS Region 6-19331 Soledad Canyon Road
Canyon Country, CA 91351
Observation:#303 CCR 66262.34(4)(2)Failed to maintain all communication or alarm
systems, spill control, or decontamination equipment.
Although the two fire extinguishers in question had been inspected within the past year, they were not
fully charged. In response to the above observation, store leadership coordinated for all fire
extinguishers be reserviced on 7/12/2019. (Please reference pictures attached.)To avoid this
occurrence in the future, the store leadership was retrained on the monthly Environmental Health and
Safety (EHS) walk that includes checking the charge level and service dates on fire extinguishers with
district and regional leadership verification.
Observation:#403 CCR 66262.34(4)(2)Failed to keep hazardous waste containers closed
except when adding or removing hazardous waste.
As noted in the report, the hazardous waste items at issue were illegally dumped near Big Lots
dumpsters and were brought into the store under the direction of the Asset Protection team. Notably,
these items had not yet been processed; there was no "failure to keep hazardous waste containers
closed." In response to the above observation regarding the processing of this waste, store leadership
immediately processed the haz waste in the corresponding totes using UL WERSmart application and
Big Lots Haz Waste Program Manual. Store leadership was retrained on Big Lots' hazardous waste
program manual requirements regarding timely processing of hazardous waste.
Observation:#605 CCR 66262.34(f) Failed to completely label containers or portable tanks of
hazardous waste.
In response to the above observation, store leadership immediately corrected the labeling on all
hazardous waste totes and processed bags as directed by the inspector. Store leadership was
retrained on all hazardous waste program labeling and container management requirements.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss our responses in this letter at your convenience. If you have
any questions or require additional information, please contact the undersigned directly.
Sincerely,
Dayne Hinojosa
Regulatory Compliance Manager, Big Lots Stores Inc.
dhinoiosa@biglots.com
661-336-8342 (cell)
661-309-9054 (office)
