I April 6, 1998
Page 3
• included MtBE et - di-
isopropyl t butanol {TBA), di isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl
ether (EtBE), and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME) The two composited stockpile
samples were analyzed for TPPH-g, BTEX compounds, and total lead Analytical data
are summarized in Table 1 and are discussed below The certified analytical reports and
chain-of-custody documentation are presented as Attachment A
Soil samples were initially analyzed for volatile organic compounds by EPA
Method 8260, however, due to a misunderstanding with the laboratory fuel oxygenate
compounds were not included in the analyses When this omission was noted it was
found that MtBE results could be retrieved from the initial EPA Method 8260 analyses,
but not the other oxygenate compounds Therefore, a second round of analyses were
performed for fuel oxygenate compounds, 8 days past the sample hold time
At sample location PD-1, TPPH-g and BTEX compounds were detected in samples
collected at 2 and 5 feet However, the concentrations of each analyte decreased with
depth Benzene was not detected at a depth of 5 feet MtBE was not detected at either
sample depth The other specified oxygenate compounds were not detected 1n the
sample collected at 5 feet
4t sample location PD-2, TPPH-g, BTEX compounds, and MtBE were detected in
samples collected at 2 and 5 feet However, the concentrations of each analyte
decreased with depth Benzene was not detected at a depth of 5 feet Other specified
oxygenate compounds were not detected in the sample collected at 5 feet
At sample location PD-3, TPPH-g, BTEX compounds, and MtBE were detected in the
2-foot sample
At sample location PD-4, TPPH-g and BTEX compounds were detected in the sample
collected at 2 feet The sample collected at 5 feet contained detectable levels of
TPPH-g, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and MtBE Other specified oxygenate
compounds were not detected m the sample collected at 5 feet
Soil analytical data for the stockpiled soils are presented in Table 2
DISTRIBUTION
A copy of tlus letter should be sent to the following
Mr Michael Infurna
San Joaquin County Public Health Services _
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor
Stockton, California 95202
4
3111791A/SOILREP
