a ..
PRE-FIELD AND FIELD PROCEDURES
:. Pre-Field Activities.
i
The pre-field activities will-include the following: !
L
• Developing a WPI Site Safety and Health Plan;
. • Scheduling subcontractors;
• Notifying Underground Service Alert (USA) and performing an underground utility
clearance for the planned drilling locations; and;
• Obtaining drilling permits from the necessary agencies.
L`
Drilling and Soil Sampling Activities
LUtility Location` _
Underground Services Alert will be notified of pending drilling activities at the station at least 48
hours prior to commencement of work. Immediately prior to drilling, each borehole location will
be hand excavated to a~depth of approximately 5 feet and to a width equal to the desired width of
the borehole.
Drilling and Sampling
` Borings B-1- through B-8 will be drilled using a truck-mounted, direct drive. Geoprobeo rig
operated by a state licensed contractor to depths of approximately 25 feet. Monitoring wells
MW-1 through MW-3 will be. drilled using a truck-mounted, hollow-stem auger drill rig.
f - -
Analytical results for samples collected from the Geoprobe borings will be used to determine two
additional monitoring well locations. The drilling and soil sampling activities will be performed
under an approved WPI Site Safety and Health Plan. The field'activities will be performed under
the supervision of a California Registered Geologist.
Soil samples will be collected at approximately 5-foot intervals from each boring to the total
depth drilled. Soil samples will be collected from borings for all monitoring wells using 'a
modified California. split-spoon; sampler, containing 3- or 6-inch-long, 2-inch-diameter brass
tubes for the retention of soil samples. The sampler will be lowered through the augers to the
4 target depth and driven 18 inches into the soil by the repeated drop of a-140-pound hammer from
a height of approximately 30 inches or a pneumatic hammer.
After retrieval of the sampler, the ends of the brass tubes containing the soil sample to be
chemically analyzed will be sealed with Teflon`s sheets and covered with plastic end caps. Soil
samples will be labeled with borehole name and sample depth, recorded on a chain-of-custody
document, and placed in cold storage for delivery to the analytical laboratory.
i
