4
i
each wellwill be gauged in order of increasing petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations based on
laboratory results of previous groundwater sampling. .
Groundwater Sampling Procedures
Prior to sampling, each well will be purged of water using a PVC bailer. Fast recharging wells
will be purged of at least four casing-volumes of water. Slow recharging wells will be purged
until dry and allowed to recover"for at least two hours before sampling. Each casing volume will
be field tested for temperature, conductivity, and pH. Turbidity and dissolved oxygen will be
measured after the last or fourth casing volume. .
Each groundwater sample will be collected using a Teflon® bailer, -equipped with.a bottom- k
em
ptymg device attached to clean, coin_ rnercial twine and gently lowered into the well. The
bailer will be all to sink into the standing water, and once filled will be recovered. The
water from the bailer will then be slowly poured into 40-m1 VOA vials with Teflon® septa, in a
manner that prevents air bubbles',from being trapped within the sample vial. Each sample will be
placed on ice to reduce volatilization, prior to being received by the analytical laboratory. In
addition to the groundwater samples from the wells, a rinsate blank and duplicate sample will be
prepared to verify the integrity of the sampling and laboratory procedures.
Each groundwater sample will be delivered under chain of custody to a state-certified analytical
laboratory :for chemical analyses. Each groundwater sample will be tested for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline using EPA Method 8015M and for BTEX, MTBE, DIPE, TBA, ETBE,
and TAME using EPA Method 8620B.
Groundwater purged from the monitoring wells will be transported to a holding tank at the
Equilon Enterprises LLC (Equilon) facility in Carson, California. Purged water will be'collected-
at the Carson facility and then transported'under a Bill of Lading to the Equilon Refinery in
Martinez, California, for recovery of the Hydrocarbons. The removal and transport of the purged '
water from the subject facility to the Equilon Carson facility will be documented on the Wayne .
Perry, Inc. Cargo Manifests.
All re-usable sampling equipment, including bailers, were washed in cion-phosphate soap and
double-rinsed in distilled water between wells to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination.
i
F
