26 October 2000
AGE-NC Project No 97-0333
4.0. FIELD PROCEDURES
All field procedures will be overseen by an AGE representative under the supervision of a California
Registered Geologist Procedures for CPT boring advancement, grab ground water sampling,
equipment decontamination and sample shipment are outlined below
41 CPT DRILLING AND GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
AGE has been informed by the PHS-EHD that significant sandy/gravelly soil has been observed at
nearby sites at depths up to 100 feet bsg Based on the sandy/gravel content of nearby sites and based
on previous sandy/gravelly soil samples collected at the site at depths up to 40 feet bsg, CPT soil
bonngs will be advanced to target depths of approximately 100 feet bsg utilizing a 25-ton truck-
mounted CPT drill ng equipped with 2-inch diameter hollow-stem rods The first soil boring will
utilize a hydraulic ram to advance a cone penetrometer to the desired depth Soil parameters such
as cone bearing, sleeve friction, friction ration and pore water pressure will be measured as the cone
penetrometer is advanced Rinseate generated during drilling activities will be containerized in
properly labeled DOT-approved 55-gallon drums, and stored on-site in an area lacking public access
A second soil boring will be located adjacent the first CPT boring for ground water sample
collection Based on CPT findings, discrete grab ground water samples will be collected in selected
saturated intervals of porous and permeable material A HydroPunch sample tool will be pushed into
the specified zone, then withdrawn approximately three feet to expose an inlet screen The interior
of the sampling tool fills with water and a I-inch outer diameter(O D ) stainless steel bailer will be
lowered and utilized to extract a ground water sample Grab ground water samples will be collected
in intervals of porous and permeable material All nnseate generated during drilling activities will
be contamenzed in properly labeled DOT-approved 55-gallon drums, and was stored on-site in an
area lacking public access
Following sample collection, the samples will be placed in laboratory-supplied containers and
transported under chain-of-custody to a DHS-certified laboratory
Proposed soil boring locations are illustrated on Figure 2 Following borehole advancement, portland
cement (grout mix) will be utilised to backfill each borehole utilizing a tremie pipe The PHS-EHL)
will be given the opportunity to inspect the grout mix prior to backfilling activities
ldianccd GLol rl sroizm i t , ;,,L
