Rick,
I was present to observe Luann marking the excavation outline and later Luann and Chris collecting the last two of ten
soil samples. My notes indicate Luann was marking the margin of the RCRA waste area.
As the 9th sample was being collected Chris said the samples were being collected approximately 5 feet outside the
excavation area; I asked if these were at 25-foot or 50-foot intervals, thinking of my requirement for grid sampling
outside the excavation for background sampling; he answered that it was 25 to 50-foot intervals. As the 10th sample was
collected,Chris and Luann noted that they were locating previous XRF points by GPS to identify collection
points. Thinking about this later, I have a few questions about this sampling event:
1. This does not appear to be following the work plan approval condition of collecting additional samples from 25-
1 grids outside the excavation area and at 50-foot grids in the next tier removed from the excavation area until
the whole parcel that falls within the legal description(in preparation) area. Are these samples still to be
collected during confirmation sampling?
2. 1 believe Chris mentioned (I might be wrong here)these being additional background samples, if this is the case,
aren't they a bit close to the excavation area?
3. To make a correlation between XRF and soil analytical data, would it not be better to take an XRF reading and
collect the sample from the exact same spot?
Mike Kith will be taking over this case from me, his number is(209)468-3444. Rick,a pleasure working with you on this
site, I respect your expertise and professionalism and am glad to have had the opportunity to work with you.
Nuel Henderson
2
