STOCKTON PLATING INC.
Chrome Tank Cleanup and Destruct Operation
The following steps listed are steps that were taken to clean
and destruct a Chrome Tank. The process was started on April 8, 1992
and completed May 7, 1992. Work was completed as spare time would
allow. Actual time worked on this project was 45 to 50 man hours .
1 . The Chrome in the tank had dried, therefore we added
water and Sulfuric Acid until a pH 2 was attained.
The Water, Acid and Chrome was mixed into a soluble
state and then it was pumped into the Chrome Destruct
sump where it was treated. The Tank was cleaned.
2 . The PVC liner was then cut into 2x3 foot sections and
stripped from the tank.
3 . As the PVC sections were stripped from the Chrome Tank
they were placed into another clean tank for further
treatment.
4 . The sections were soaked in a Water and Sulfuric Acid
solution with a pH 2 for four days.
5 . Sodium Metabisulfite was then added to the water and
Sulfuric Acid solution. Sodium Metabisulfite was added
until tests confirmed that the Hexavalent Chrome had
converted to Trivalent Chrome. The PVC sections were
allowed to soak in this solution for another four days .
6 . A square of approximately 1x1 foot was cut of PVC and
sent to a lab to be analyzed for Chrome.
7 . The analysis returned positive, and the Chrome has
all converted to Trivalent Chrome, the liner will be
disposed of with other debris in a hazardous waste
landfill.
9 . An Air Arc Torch was used to cut the tank into small
pieces.
10 . Once again the metal pieces of the tank were steam cleaned
and rinsed with clear clean water over the Chrome Destruct
Sump.
11 . The cleaned metal from the tank was hauled to a steel
scrap yard.
