Facility and PBR Units Closure Work Plan
1848 and 1856 Field Ave., Stockton, California
3.2 Issues and Potential Issues at 1856 Field Avenue
Work to date at 1856 Field Avenue includes the review of chemical use historywhich identified the chemicals
` of potential concern and the December 2001 sampling to identify potential releases.A total of 3 soil samples
and 1 concrete sample were collected from 1856 Field Avenue during December 2001,two from the chemical
` storage area and two from beneath equipment where petroleum hydrocarbon releases were a concern. The low
number of samples was a result of the low chemical usage at 1856 Field Avenue (not considering Lika, for
which DTSC certified the site clean in 1988 and which is not related to Tyco).Based on the work to date, there
are four issues or potential issues at 1856 Field Avenue.
3.2.1 Petroleum Hydrocarbons from Air Compressors
Three air compressors used for power drilling were formerly located just outside the eastern wall of 1856 Field
r Avenue. Two of the air compressors were located on asphalt, just to the south of the vacuum baghouse pad and
generally to the west of a transformer. This asphalt area is approximately 9 feet long and 6.5 feet wide.Stains
` are present on the asphalt in an area smaller than this. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the
compressor oil is presented in Appendix C.
r
During sample collection in December 2001,Earth Tech collected soil sample BL2-04(shown on figures as
Location 20) from native soil immediately beneath a stained area of asphalt in the air compressor area.
Chemical analysis of this sample detected 49,000 mg/kg of total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons(TRPH).
3.2.2 Petroleum Hydrocarbons from Lamination Press
Three lamination presses were used to laminate pre-impregnated fiberglass/epoxy layers onto printed circuit
boards in the Lamination Room at 1856 Field Avenue. As with the other flooring at 1856 Field Avenue, the
` lamination press area was underlain by a concrete floor. Around the lamination press area, the concrete was
coated with a chemical resistant coating("Stonehard'),but in an area approximately 18 feet by 21 feet, the
concrete is not coated.Within this area, there are several visible cracks in the floor, and the footprint of former
rails apparently for railed heavy equipment. Two areas of staining are visible in this area, apparently around
- two former pieces of equipment. Stains cover areas approximately 3-foot by 6-foot and 5-foot by 8-foot. A
MSDS for the lamination press oil is presented in Appendix C.
L:IWOW690991Gener RReldWPTieldAveWPAug03r 2.doc 9 August2003
