03/02/t993 23: 08 5102540579 ""-
Mr. Ted Cooper
RM - Holz Inc.
March 3, 1993
Page 2
weld joint for cracking or deformation. The welds were noted as satisfactory at
the time of the inspection.
The tank is approximately 5'-0"x8'-0"x6'-0" deep and has a flush full capacity of
240 cu. ft. ( approximately 1,700 gallons).
There are two fill pipes discharging into the tank through holes cut in the top
sheet. The discharge line (2") is welded Into the floor plate and has a ball valve
for shutoff located at the edge of the tank. This ball valve has a keyed lock
attached to it so that unauthorized discharge can not occur. There is a
compressed air sparging line located in the tank for mixing and aeration. The line
to the sparger enters the tank vertically from the top so that back siphoning will
not occur.
The age of the tank is unknown,
TANK INTEGRITY
The tank has been analyzed for stability under seismic zone 3 requirements of
the 1988 UBC. The tank, and its supports, meet or exceed the loading
requirements at this time. The tank is stable against horizontal seismic forces
without anchoring to the slab.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The top plate is fabricated from mild steel, At some time in the future it may be
prudent to replace the top with a stainless material to reduce the corrosion
potential.
No overflow control or drain has been provided. Consideration should be given to
adding either an overflow capable of handling the maximum fill rate, or a level
sensor arranged to shut off the feed.
CLOSURE
Because of the material being handled, the tank may require secondary
containment under Section 66264.193 of Title 22. We have not reviewed this
consideration other than to note that curbing around the tank pad, which could
serve as secondary containment, Is badly cracked and is needing repair. The
tank may be exempt under subsection (g) or other subsections of this Section.
This should be reviewed by the engineer and the operator to assure continuing
compliance with the provisions of Title 22.
Our review of the tank has determined that as of March 3, 1993, this tank was in
compliance with the intent of Section 66264.191 of Title 22.
