Orenco Systems Inc. March 2002
AdvanTex AX10 Test Report
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The results incorporated herein represents 13.5 months of testing of an Orenco Systems
Inc. AdvanTex'" AX10 unit following the NSF/ANSI Standard 40 protocol. The unit wastested during the first 10 months at a hydraulic loading rate of 500 gpd (60_gpd/ft2) and
during the balance of the testing period at 400 gpd (48 gpd/ft2).
The average TSS concentration always remained below the NSF/ANSI Standard 40 limit of
< 30 mg/L throughout the testing program. During the 511 month of testing, the average
CBOD5 concentration exceeded the 30-day limit of< 25 mg/L.
An inspection of the treatment system revealed that a lar of biosolids ha
accumulated in the drain pipe connecting the filter box to the recircula_tiox-coriart_ment,
and the biofilm growth on t e top of the filter was not uniform, with sections of the filter
appearing to be loaded more than others. Unlike a typical AX10 installation, in which the
filter drains directly into the recirculation compartment, the test unit drain pipe was much
longer and installed at a shallower grade to facilitate future modifications and nutrient
removal testing planned to follow the NSF/ANSI Standard 40 testing program.
During the 6th month the drain pipe from the filter to the recirculation chamber was cleared
of accumulated solids and modified (shortened & realigned)to minimize the length of pipe
between the filter and recirculation compartment for the purpose of reducing the potential
for biosolids to accumulate. These changes did not appear to significantly improve the
effluent quality.
During the latter part of the 7th month the distribution manifold was modified to achieve a
more uniform spray distribution over the filter, and during the early part of the 8t"month the
! filter dosing characteristics (frequency and duration)were changed. These modifications
appeared to significantly improve effluent quality, and the average CBODS concentration for
the 8'h month was less than 21 mg/L.
At the end of the 10th month, the flow rate was reduced from 500 to 400 gpd, and the
NSF/ANSI Standard 40 stress tests carried out earlier during Months 5 and 6 were
repeated to examine the impact of a lower hydraulic loading on unit performance. The
average effluent CBODr,concentration was less than 8 mg/L during the last two months of
testing. The overall average CBODS and TSS concentration through the 13.5 months of
testing, were 21 mg/L and 17 mg/L, respectively, at an average hydraulic loading rate of
about 53.5 gpd/ft2.
Nova Tec Consultants Inc.
