Orenco Systems Inc. March 2002
AdvanTex AX10 Test Report
1. INTRODUCTION
This report has been compiled to summarize the findings of the testing of the Orenco
AdvanTexTrm AXI 0 individual wastewater treatment plant at the Mamquam Wastewater
Technology Testing Facility located in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada. The testing
program was initiated on October 6, 2000, and completed on November 16, 2001,
representing a total of 398 days (about 57 weeks)of testing. This document describes the
testing program, presents and discusses the data collected, and compares results with
comparable experiments and reports.
The AX10 unit is an attached growth multiple-pass packed bed filter. Its fibreglass housing
is 30 inches wide, 45 inches long and 32 inches deep and is filled with textile filter media.
The textile fabric is Orenco AF-1-0.25-4. Details of the unit tested on site are presented in
Appendix A.
A manifold placed on top of the filter distributes wastewater over the media. The manifold
configuration installed at the start of testing consists of 5 laterals, each containing seven
orifices (i.e. 35 orifices in total) spaced identically along each lateral as shown in
Photograph#1. The original manifold was replaced during the 8t"month with another five-
lateral unit in which the orifices in each lateral were staggered in a diamond configuration
(i.e. 33 orifices in total)as shown in Photograph#2. The intent of the second manifold was
to achieve a more uniform distribution of effluent over the top of the filter.
Raw sewage enters the first compartment of a two-compartment tank (1,500 gallon total
working volume). The first 1,000 gallon compartment provides 48 hours of retention at the
highest tested flow rate of 500 gpd. This compartment provides primary treatment;
settleable solids accumulate on the bottom and floatable solids accumulate on the surface.
.Effluent from the clear layer in the first compartment flows into the second 500 gallon
compartment (recirculation compartment), which provides 24 hours of retention at the
highest tested flow rate. A screened vault located in the second compartment pumps
effluent, at a predetermined frequency, to a manifold that distributes the liquid over textile
media inside a filter pod. Effluent percolates down through the media and is collected at
the bottom of the filter pod.
Treated effluent normally drains directly from the bottom of the filter pod to the recirculation
compartment. However, to facilitate extended nutrient removal testing following the
NSF/ANSI Standard 40 testing program, the filter pod was installed at a distance from the
recirculation compartment, and drained through a length of drainpipe to a float splitter
valve.
Nova Tec Consultants Inc.
