Walnut Grove Road, Thornton
APN 00114040, PR0522382
The San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD) has reviewed Onsite
Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) Inspection Report for the above noted location, and
has the following comments for your consideration.
Based on the information provided EHD can make the following findings:
1. Nitrification is not occurring in the treatment tanks evident by ammonia in the final
effluent. Reasons for this could be harsh chemicals used in the commercial kitchens
cause the nitrifying bacteria to die off (Quaternary Ammonia 400 ppm strength is used
for disinfection here). Another reason could be there is not enough dissolved oxygen
available for nitrification. The oxygen diffusers, blowers, timers or oxygen supply may
be malfunctioning.
2. Elevated levels of BOD (biological oxygen demand) are reported and confirmed in a
confirmation sample in the effluent. The wastewater is not treated enough before going
out to the leach field which can degrade groundwater quality.
Based on the information EHD recommends the following actions:
1. Service the aeration system immediately (air compressor, diffuser, biomedia) and test
for dissolved oxygen in the aeration tanks. Submit results and repair receipts to EHD for
review and record keeping. Dissolved oxygen should be sampled for in the aeration
chamber and included in the sampling going forward.
2. Ensure that recirculation is occurring from the final clarifier to the primary clarifier to
promote den itrification, provide a work receipt that this has been inspected.
3. Total suspended solids should be sampled for in the effluent sample going forward to
monitor clarifier performance.
4. The use of disinfectants in the kitchen may be causing upset in the treatment tanks and
could interfere with sampling results. Consider using an alternative disinfectant and
separate excess disinfectant from entering the treatment tanks.
5. EHD recommends increasing sampling to quarterly until a more accurate performance
baseline is observed.
1868 E.
