Medical Waste Management <br /> 1 . Introduction to the Medical Waste Management <br /> A. Purpose of the Medical Waste Management <br /> The purpose of this Medical Waste Management Plan ( " MWMP" ) is to provide guidance and describe <br /> requirements for the proper management of medical waste in Banfield Pet Hospitals ( Banfield ) as <br /> required by the California Department of Public Health ( CDPH ) and local Lead Enforcement Agencies <br /> ( LEA) . <br /> This MWMP shall be maintained on site at this hospital in the Safety Binder. If changes related to <br /> medical waste generation occur, contact the Health, Safety and Environment ( HSE ) group to update this <br /> plan . It shall be made available upon request to the medical waste transporter, medical waste treatment <br /> facility, and CDPH or LEA . Please inform the HSE group of any requests for the plan , as soon as possible . <br /> All records related to medical waste management shall be maintained at this hospital for at least three <br /> ( 3 ) years . Copies of medical waste disposal tracking documents should be filed in the hospital' s Safety <br /> Binder, and completed documents can be downloaded from www sharpstracer . com9 <br /> This plan specifies the procedures used to handle and dispose of medical waste at Banfield . Banfield <br /> conducts a wide range of veterinary services . This hospital is a small quantity medical waste generator, <br /> as it produces less than 200 pounds of medical waste per month . Medical waste is collected in approved <br /> collection receptacles and authorized transport/treatment vendors pick up medical wastes for off-site <br /> disposal and /or destruction . Banfield does not treat any medical waste on -site . <br /> B . Applicability <br /> The Medical Waste Management Plan applies to all operations that result in the generation and disposal <br /> of medical waste materials . Medical waste that could be generated at this hospital includes <br /> biohazardous waste, pathology waste, sharps waste, and pharmaceutical waste . Trace chemotherapy <br /> wastes are also considered medical wastes, but are not generated at this hospital . Pharmaceutical <br /> wastes, while generated by the hospital, will not be managed as medical waste, pursuant to this plan . <br /> Pharmaceutical wastes, including expired or empty non-controlled pharmaceutical containers, waste <br /> propofol or other liquid drugs, pill residues, spilled drugs, etc . , will be managed as hazardous waste and <br /> are covered in the Hazardous Waste Management Section of this document . Drug Enforcement Agency <br /> ( DEA) controlled pharmaceuticals, including expired , damaged , recalled, empty, or unused containers, <br /> are managed in accordance with DEA requirements by the veterinarian . <br /> C . Rales and Responsibilities <br /> The HSE group oversees the Medical Waste Management Plan . The HSE group is trained on the contents <br /> of this plan , and is able to provide guidance and assistance to the Banfield community in managing <br /> anagement implementation at <br /> medical waste . The Practice Manager is responsible for Medical Waste M <br /> this hospital .
