Sharps Waste <br /> Sharps waste is the most common medical waste generated by Banfield , and includes needles, syringes <br /> contaminated with biohazardous waste, broken glass such as slides or broken pharmaceutical bottles <br /> ( after emptying the bottle per Hazardous Waste Section ), etc . All supplies required for proper handling <br /> and storage are available from Banfield Direct . Sharps waste is not to be mixed with any other waste <br /> type, including but not limited to pharmaceutical waste . <br /> Container: Dispose of sharps in a leak- and puncture -proof sharps container labeled with a biohazard <br /> sticker. Sharps containers must be rigid , leak- proof, puncture proof, and closable . These containers are <br /> not lined with a plastic bag or inner liner. Do not fill sharps containers above recommended fill line, or <br /> more than 75% full . <br /> Prior to disposing of a sharp containing unused pharmaceuticals (for example, propofol ) , the <br /> pharmaceutical should be managed as a hazardous waste and discharged into a hazardous waste bag <br /> with cat litter . A similar approach is required for broken pharmaceutical bottles . The pharmaceutical <br /> should be absorbed with cat litter ( if liquid ) or swept up, placed in a sealable bag, and labeled with <br /> contents . The bag is then placed in the Propofol Waste Container. Additional detail on managing the <br /> pharmaceutical waste is provided in the Hazardous Waste Management Section . The empty sharp or <br /> broken bottle can then be placed in the sharps container . Do not dispose of Intact ( unbroken ) empty or <br /> expired pharmaceutical bottles and dropped or discarded pills in sharps containers . <br /> f. <br /> y <br /> Stora e : When the container is 75% full (to the recommended fill line) , tightly close and shut the lid , <br /> label the container with the closed date , hospital name , address, and phone number, and place in the <br /> Designated Accumulation Area . Do not overfill or compress waste . Closed sharps containers should be <br /> placed in the larger container that is labeled with the biohazard symbol or word on all visible sides . <br /> Disposal : Filled and closed sharps waste containers must be picked up within 30 days . Check the closed <br /> date on the sharps containers frequently to ensure the storage limit is not exceeded . Closed sharps <br /> waste containers will be picked up once a month by a waste hauler contracted by Sharps, Inc . If a pick up <br /> is needed before the scheduled pick up, call Sharps, Inc .
