Alaniz, John
From: Liliana Mejia <Imejia@smcgov.org>
Sent: Wednesday, October 30, 2019 4:47 PM
To: Alaniz, John
Cc: Backus, Garrett
Subject: RE: Dialysis Center Hazardous Waste_San Joaquin County
John,
We have dialysis facilities regulated for the storage of chemicals but not for hazardous waste generation. They use salts
and acids to produce the dialysate which is a very diluted solution used to remove the impurities from the blood of the
patient. The used solution is discarded through the sanitary system. It is a mixed waste but I don't believe it has the
potential to be hazardous due to the low concentration of chemicals.
Their equipment include pumps and there may be some that require oil change. The equipment is typically serviced by a
third party contractor. If used oil is generated, the contractor usually transport this waste. They don't generate any
other hazardous waste to my knowledge.
Best,
Liliana
From:Alaniz,John <jalanizl@sjgov.org>
Sent: Wednesday, October 30, 2019 2:17 PM
To: Liliana Mejia <Imejia@smcgov.org>
Cc: Backus, Garrett<gbackus@sjgov.org>
Subject: Dialysis Center Hazardous Waste_San Joaquin County
CAUTION:This email originated from outside of San Mateo County.Unless you recognize the sender's email address and know
the content is safe,do not click links, open attachments or reply.
Hi Liliana,
I am a hazardous waste inspector for the San Joaquin County CUPA. I recently did a hazardous waste inspection at
DaVita Port City Dialysis. When I asked to see their hazardous waste records, they replied that they did not generate
anything hazardous. I looked through their chemical inventory and did not see anything that indicated a
listed/characteristic waste was generated. My question for you: Have you seen or heard of any hazardous wastes being
generated at a dialysis center? This facility only does dialysis. Any information you have would be very much
appreciated.
Thank You,
John Alaniz
REHS
San Joaquin County
