MODEL 580X
ZEROING
Once the OVM has been zeroed, the display will read:
SPAN GAS PPM = 0000
The span gas concentration may now be entered by simultaneously pressing the RESET switch and either
the +/INC to increment the digit above the cursor or the -/CRSR switch to move the cursor. The span gas
normally used is Isobutylene with a concentration of about 100 ppm. Once the span gas concentration has been
entered, you will see:
SPAN GAS
RESET WHEN READY
Once the span gas has been introduced, the RESET switch should be pressed. The display will read:
MODEL 580X
CALIBRATING
After the OVM is finished calibrating, it will go back to the beginning and display:
"RESET" TO
CALIBRATE
Press the MODE/STORE switch and the OVM will now start taking readings.
If during zeroing or calibration the OVM a steady reading was not seen by the OVM, the display will read:
CAL ERROR
RESET WHEN READY
Pressing the RESET switch will return the OVM to zeroing or calibrating message. If you get another
CAL ERROR message, turn off the OVM for 5 seconds and restart the calibration sequence. If you still have
problems getting the OVM to calibrate, notify your equipment manager.
Here are a few operating tips:
• During extremely cold weather, it may be necessary to calibrate the OVM every two hours.
• The OVM probe is not designed to stick directly into water or soil. If the OVM is subjected to
this sort of punishment, it will cause costly(and lengthy)repairs. The probe should be waved or
held at least 6 inches from the sample.
• Charge the battery overnight just before taking it to the field.
• Always calibrate the OVM in the field - it makes a big difference with the readings.
• During rainy weather, a two-gallon should be used to protect the OVM - holes should be made
for the probe section in front and the exhaust in the rear of the OVM. This is also a good idea
for
using in heavily contaminated areas and saves a lot of cleaning.
NOTE: The "X" in the MODEL 580X message signifies that there are several models available. The current
model is 580B for the normal OVM or 540S for intrinsically safe model.
OVM.CAL Page 2 of 2
