The organic matter in the perc test borings and backhoe test pit are all low. The nitrate-nitrogen
concentrations under the ball field grass all have exceptionally low nitrate-nitrogen concentrations at
1.0 ppm. This is a tribute to the School's maintenance person, Mr. Jeff Golzt, who fertilizers the
grass with slow-release nitrogen fertilizers so that the grass can uptake the ammonium and nitrate
fractions of the nitrogen in a timely process.
The pH of the soils is alkaline at approximately 8.0 which will retard ammonium formation. The
CEC ranges between 15 and 20 which would be expected given the soil texture analysis of a clay and
clay loam. High CEC theoretically has a higher potential for adsorbing ammonium molecules. The
clay content of the soils indicates an ample percentage of clay to promote biochemical processes,
including the destruction of bacteria and viruses.
Of interest, is the decrease in nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 10 ppm down to 2 ppm from the 6 ft
to 10 ft depth in the backhoe test pit; an 80% decrease. Since the subject property had been recently
under agricultural production, this decrease readily illustrates significant denitrification occurring
from the application of nitrogen fertilizers.
NLS§3.3, SSS§ 5.3, 5.4.
