i
E
E
- i
James Tjosvold
i
Wg
February 7, 1990
described as episodes of three days in which the heaviest day of
each episode is analyzed. The results are shown in Table 1
(episode 2) and Table 2 (episode 3) . Episode 1 was voided
because of a malfunctioning meteorological station.
Comments
Chromium - Results from Phase I ranged from 3 - 5 ng/m3 for
inhalable particulate and 4 - 107 ng/m for total particulate.
Based on the EPA evaluation of trivalent chromium (prevalent
species on site surface) 3. the level that should not pose a risk
to humans is 16, 000 ng/m . Based on these values, chromium was
excluded from any risk evaluation.
Arsenic (Total) - Total particulate samplers collect airborne
particulates of all sizes. The results are used to calculate the
risk from ingestion of airborne particulate. This risk is minor
compared to inhalation of smaller particulates and was not
included in the risk assessment.
M&B should include the ingestion route via particulates to
provide a complete assessment.
Arsenic (Inhalable) - Particulates in the respiraYle range (2-10
um) were collected. Concentrations from 3-23 ng/m were detected
from the interior of the facility. EPA Integrated isk
Information System (IRIS) calculates a concentration 0.2 ng/m to
pose an excess cancer risk of one in million for residents. DHS
calculation for excess cancer risk is 0. 7 ng/m for offsite
workers. Based on the measured results, additional sampling at
the facility boundary and nearest receptor was warranted.
PCP (Particulate) - Total particulate samples were analyzed for
PCP. The chemical was not detected in any samples except once in
episode 2 .
The data indicates that either no PCP contaminated dust was
released or that PCP is stripped off the dust which is trapped on
the filter.
PCP (Vapor) - A foam plug which traps PCP vapor was placed in
series beind the PCP particulate filter. Results range from 6.7
- 80 ug/m . DHS has calculated an applied action level (AAL) for
PCP in air. A level of 0. 22 ug/m in air pose a one in a
million cancer risk for residents and 0. 79 ug/m for offsite
workers. Based on the measured concentrations, additional
sampling at the facility boundary and nearest receptor was
warranted.
