Box 1810
Stockton, CA 95201
REVIEW OFFIRST QUARTER 2001 A10NITORING REPORT, CORRAL HOLLOW SANITARY
LANDFILL,SANJOA QUIN COUNTY(CASE NO. 1896)
Regional Board staff has reviewed the Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill,First Quarter 2001,Groundwater and
Surface Water Monitoring Report, dated 15 April 2001. Based on our review we noted the following:
Monitoring Well 5 (MW-5) analysis showed increasing trends for the following water parameters and
constituents: electrical conductivity,TDS,chloride, cis-1,2-Dichloroethene,Tetrachloroethene and Vinyl
Chloride and decreasing trends for pH,turbidity,Acetone and Dichloroflouromethane.Acetone was also
detected in Monitoring Well SB-1. Since Acetone is a common laboratory contaminant, and was found in
both the trip blank and field blank, the County considers the detection a false positive and did not
resample. However, the County will reconsider the Acetone detections in the Second Quarter
Monitoring Event.
Monitoring Well 4 (MW-4) analysis showed an increase in chloride that the County believes to be an
error. Since the reported concentrations of sulfate are much lower than the historical data, the County
believes that the values may have been switched while the report was being generated. .Therefore, the
County performed additional analysis on this data, and determined an exceedance has not occurred and
no increasing trend in chloride was noted in MW-4.
The color of the groundwater in SB-1 was reported as red in the Fourth Quarter 2000 monitoring event.
The First Quarter 2001 reported the purged water in SB-1 as clear to pink with low to moderate turbidity.
Purple/pink chunks were visible on the PVC bailer. The nature of the discoloration is unknown, but
preliminary investigation indicates that the discoloration is not impacting the groundwater. The color in
MW-4 was light brown with moderate turbidity. The color of both surface water samples were brown
with high turbidity. The County will continue to monitor the nature of the discoloration of purged water.
If you have any questions or comments regarding my review, please call me at(916)255-3126.
VICTOR J.
