6.8 percent. We speculate this was caused by our reduction of LFG collection rate in May of this
year. The LFG collection rate was reduced out of concern that the overall methane content of the
gas collected by the LFG system was below 30 percent, indicating significant intrusion of air into
the landfill and the potential for a subsurface landfill fire. Therefore, the County incrementally
reduced the collection of the LFG system to reduce the potential. This successfully increased the
methane content of the collected LFG to above 35 percent, but the reduced collection rate was
apparently insufficient to control migration toward GW-6-intermediate. When this exceedence
was detected, the County immediately increased LFG collection, and this probe is again below
the regulatory limit in this monitoring period (Table 1).
Due to the concentration of methane in probe GW-6-deep, the County is continuing to increase
the collection from the LFG wells near GW-6. It is our intent to control migration at GW-6
while also minimizing intrusion of air into the landfill. The County will continue to increase the
collection of LFG from that portion of the system until the methane content at GW-6 deep is
consistently below regulatory limits.
Corral Hollow Landfill October 1,2002
San Joaquin County 3 Quarterly LFG Monitoring
