A letter from Water Board Staff dated February 3, 2003, suggests that a release from the landfill
is impacting groundwater in the vicinity of MW-4. The County does not share the Board staff's assertion
in this regard. A response to that letter is forthcoming in which the County will ask that a preliminary
site investigation be allowed prior to submitting an engineering feasibility study. Meanwhile, the County
will continue to closely monitor the concentrations of inorganic constituents in MW-4.
Five Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs)were detected in MW-5 this quarter. This is the fewest
number of VOCs detected in a single monitoring event in nearly three years. Overall, the County has
seen a reduction in total VOCs detections this year compared to last(see Annual Monitoring Summary
Report). The County views this as an indication of the effectiveness of the landfill gas collection system
at mitigating the release of VOCs into the vadose zone. The County will continue to closely monitor
groundwater quality in the vicinity of well MW-5 to ensure improvement.
If you have any questions, please call me at(209)468-3066.
Sincerely,
W.MICHAEL CARROLL,PE
Senior Civil Engineer
MC:sc
N:\l Corrall Hollow\Groundwater Monitoring\Repts2002\4thQO21etter.wpd
Enclosure
c: Robert McClellon,Environmental Health Department
LA 21850
