Rice Hulls
The compost mixture will consist of 80-90 percent rice hulls mixed with 10-20 percent o Ce
chicken and/or steer manure to facilitate the composting of the rice hulls. The resultant
material will be used in the manufacture of potting mix and soil amendments.
Grape Pomace `
The compost mixture will consist of approximately 80 percent Douglas fir bark"fines"
(humus) and approximately 20 percent grape pomace. The resultant material will be used
in the manufacture of potting mix and soil amendments.
Paper Fiber
The compost mixture will consist of approximately 20 percent reclaimed paper fiber and
80 percent bark"fines". The paper fiber will be obtained from GP Gypsum in San
Leandro. The paper fiber is derived from recycled cardboard; whose fibers are not long
enough to recycle into new paper products. It is possible that a different mix ratio will be
used due to the carbon-nitrogen ratio within the paper fiber. In addition, it is also
possible that paper fibers, humus and manure will be mixed together to accelerate the
composting of the paper fibers.
Individual loads of paper fiber will be inspected for foreign matter. If the load is
determined to be unacceptable, the material will be refused. The agreement between
Scotts and GP Gypsum will specify the process for refusal of paper fiber loads.
Proposed Raw Material Sources:
Paper fiber: Obtained from GP Gypsum in San Leandro
Grape pomace: Obtained from local vineyards
Chicken or Steer manure: Obtained from local dairies and chicken farms
Rice Hulls: Obtained from regional rice growers
