a. If the pH is under 5, add sodium borate in '/4 teaspoon increments until the pH is 5 or
above.
b. If the pH is over 10, add approx. '/4 packet of Neutralex at a time, shake and let sit for 15
minutes minimum, and repeat until the pH is below 10.
7. Using the Residual Formaldehyde Test Kit from the refrigerator:
a. Add 5 mL of sample to the small vial in the kit.
b. Add 10 drops of sodium hydroxide to the vial and gently turn vial between fingers to mix.
c. Dip a test strip into the vial for one second. Compare the resultant color on the strip
with the chart on the strip container at 60 seconds after dipping.
d. Record test results on the log.
e. If the residual formaldehyde reading is >100 ppm, repeat treatment with '/4-'/2 bag of
Neutralex, retest after treatment, and record the results.
8. Once the pH is between 5 and 10 and residual formaldehyde is <100ppm, initial the back of
the jug label indicating that the jug is ready for discharge and record the final pH and residual
formaldehyde.
9. Treated waste formalin is disposed of directly into tank B by a SLA wearing a respirator with
assistance from another SLA wearing a respirator.
a. Obtain key to tank B and use a lab cart to transport jugs that are ready for disposal to
the back parking lot.
b. Wearing a lab apron, rubber gloves, and a respirator, unlock the tank lid. Gently shake
the jug, then remove lid and pour the neutralized waste formalin into the tank. The SLA
on the ground can shake the jug and hand them to the SLA on the step-stool. After
emptying contents, the SLA on the platform ladder can then hand the empty jug back
down to the SLA on the ground.
c. After all jugs are empty, replace and lock the tank B lid. Erase all information from jug
labels before returning the jugs to lab.
References:
Neutralex MSDS:
www.scigenus.com/Documentation/Doc 634479794717333042 4047MSDS.pdf
Treatment Procedure for Formalin Using the EPR/DTSC Certified Neutralex® Technology:
www.scigenus.com/Documentation/Doc 634251154106616875 10FormalinProcedure 2010.pdf
Neutralex Patent:
www.google.com/patents/US5545336
Residual formalin test kit patent (alternative test patent):
www.google.com/patents/US6426182
Neutralex Treatment Note:
https:Hnrm.dfq.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentlD=69455
Revised 10/8/2018 by A.
