07 March 2008
AGE -NC Project No. 07-1569
Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) and diesel (TPH-d), in
accordance with EPA Method 8015M;
• Purgeable aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes: BTEX), in accordance
with EPA Method 8260B; and
• CAM 17 metals in accordance with EPA Methods 6010B or 7471.
EHD also directed that soil samples 5-2800A and 5-2802A be analyzed for asbestos in addition to
the above constituents. CTEL hand -delivered samples to AmeriSci Los Angeles, of Carson,
California, for asbestos analysis utilizing Bulk -Qualitative Protocol.
Prior to sample collection, sampling equipment was thoroughly rinsed with clean water after being
washed with a solution of Alconox.
Organic vapors were not detected in any samples collected using the PID. Furthermore, no petroleum
hydrocarbon -like odors were noted in any of in the samples collected.
TPH-d was reported in soil samples 5-2802 and 5-2805, at concentrations of 1,200 milligrams per
kilogram (mg/kg) and 610 mg/kg, respectively. The TPH-d concentrations were above the San
Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board (SFBRWQCB) Environmental Screening
Level (ESL) for residential soil. The lowest ESL value for TPH-d contamination detected in deep
soil samples is 83 mg/kg for potential to leach into the ground water. While the ESL value for TPH-d
contamination detected in deep soil as a risk from human exposure is 150 mg/kg and gross
contamination is 5,000 mg/kg. Shallow soil ESL values are generally less then or near 100 mg/kg.
Six of the seventeen CAM 17 metals were detected in the collected soil samples (Table 2). Barium
was detected in all samples at a maximum concentration of 210 mg/kg (5-2800A); zinc was detected
in five samples at a maximum concentration of 21 mg/kg (5-2800); chromium was detected in four
samples at a maximum concentration of 9.9 mg/kg (5-2800A); vanadium was detected in three
samples at 19 mg/kg (5-2800); copper was detected in two samples at a maximum concentration of
52 mg/kg (5-2800A); and lead was detected in one sample at a maximum concentration of 53 mg/kg
(5-2800A). The concentrations of the six detectable CAM 17 metals were within the range of
concentrations reported for these metals in California soils (Bradford and others, 1996), although
vanadium concentrations in samples 5-2800 and 5-2800A were above the SFBRWQCB-established
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
