MANAGING HAZARDOUS WASTE
FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS
Fluorescent light bulbs (lamps) cannot be disposed of in the trash. Illumetek (our vendor) manages
used light bulbs for our stores. When Illumetek arrives at the store, they are required to replace used
light bulbs with new ones and remove the used ones from the store at the time of service. If a bulb is
broken during Illumetek's service at the store, Illumetek is required to properly manage and dispose of
these broken bulb(s) as well. In the event a fluorescent bulb is broken by accident or by a store asso-
ciate, follow the steps listed below:
1. Secure the area to prevent customer or associate access.
2. Leave the area and let it ventilate for 15 minutes.
3. Avoid direct contact with broken light bulb debris.
4. Put on gloves and goggles.
5. Carefully scoop up fragments of the bulb with stiff cardboard and/or duct tape. DO NOT use a
vacuum or broom.
6. Wipe the area (including floor and store shelving) with damp paper towels or wet wipes.
7. Inspect merchandise for debris.
8. Place everything (bulb fragments, gloves, wipes, etc.) into a gallon size, zip-loc style sealing
storage bag.
9. Seal bag and label as "Broken Lamp."
10. Place the sealed gallon size, zip-loc style sealing storage bag into the Toxic Waste tote.
11. Wash your hands.
VENDOR WASTE
Vendors are responsible for the removal and disposal of any items considered Hazardous Waste they
bring and or use in your store. They are to take these items with them when they leave your store.
A. This includes, any floor care chemicals and the buckets your floor crew may use. At no time are
floor care chemicals to ever be poured down storm drains or in the parking lot.
B. HVAC service providers are required to remove any and all Freon tanks they bring on site for the
service.
C. Fluorescent ceiling bulbs must be returned to Illumetek for disposal. Store is not to return bulbs
to waste management. Illumetek is also required to remove all used ballast from our premises for
disposal.
Q B C
BIGOTS Hazardous Waste Management Program
Revised 3/21/16
