We inspect them quarterly. Last week I was doing the inspection and found that they had started to compost their
dead chickens by grinding up the chickens and mixing with wood shavings and placing in windrows. They depopulated one of the
chicken houses of 120,000 chickens. The carcass compost windrows are in a different building than the manure compost
windrows.
Are facilities allowed to compost chicken carcasses with a notification tier permit or is a full solid waste facility permit required? We
are not sure that chicken carcasses are included in the definition of agricultural material (T14 CCR 17852). Are there facilities in the
state which are composting carcasses with a notification tier permit?
Thx,
Garrett Backus, REHS
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
304 E Weber Ave, 3rd floor
Stockton, CA 95202
telephone: (209) 468-2986
fax: (209) 468-8392
email: gbackus@sjcehd.com
11/16/2007
