GROUND WATER IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY, CALIFORNIA A3 <br />Agriculture is the major commercial activity in the <br />valley, providing jobs for about 30 percent of the popu- <br />lation and cash receipts to farmers of about $13 billion in <br />1983. The Central Valley contains 5 of the top 10 <br />agricultural counties (in value of crops sold) in the United <br />States, including Fresno (number 1), Kern (number 2), <br />and Kings (number 3). To support this level of agricul- <br />tural activity in an area that is deficient in precipitation <br />requires a substantial amount of irrigation water.
