. Dealing with the news media
Medical Treatment/First Aid. In emergencies, toxic exposures and hazardous situations
that cause injuries and illnesses will vary from place to place and from one emergency
situation to another. Medical treatment may range from bandaging of minor cuts and
abrasions to life-saving techniques, In many cases, ctisential medical help may not be
immediately available. For this reason, our onsite emergency personnel will be trained in
on-the-spot treatment techniques, how to establish and maintain telephone contact with
medical experts (e.g, toxicologists), and how to establish liaisons with local hospitals and
ambulance services.
Training will include:
Training personnel in enmergcncy treatment such as first aid and CPR, That training will
be thorough, frequently repeated, and geared to specific hazards that could exist on the
premises.
Establishment of liaison with local medical personnel, for example: 24-hour cin-call
physician,medical specialist,local hospitals,ambulance service,and poison control center.
They will be informed und educated about site-specific hazards so that they can be
optimally helpful if as emncrgency occurs. We have developed procedures for contacting
thew; and have familiarized all onsite emergency personnel with those procedures,
Establishing on-site emergency first-aid station; and making sure that they are well
supplied and restocked immediately after each emergency.
It is equally important that a telephone or two-way radio be available, along wi,the
necessary phone numbers for medical and other emergency services (for example, local
rescue squad, fire and police departments). Emergency first aid equipment and medical
personnel, or someone who knows how to provide emergency first aid, must always be
present and readily available at the worksite, Instructions for the fastest route to the
nearest hospital or medical facility is available, along with the necessary transportation
equipment.
Rescue Operations
The type of rescue operation shall be determined and the necessary steps implemented,
Some actions may have to be done concurrently. No one should attempt emergency
response or rescue until backup personnel and evacuation routes have been identified.
The following rescue operations will be:
e Whether and how to respond
® The teed for evacuation of on-site personnel and offsite population
