o
J. H. KLEINFELDER & ASSOCIATES
File: S-1008-21/12 : 337
Revised: July 8 , 1986
Page 7
The above compatibility rating does not consider
absorption/adsorption of contaminants onto or into the PVC
polymer matrix and the potential for leading solvents and certain
heavy metals from the PVC into the ground water samples. These
concerns have been raised and documented to occur under
laboratory conditions, but to date, there are few data
documenting these effects in the field. It is the dominant
consensus that under low organic contamination conditions,
sufficient purging and proper sampling and decontamination
procedures should eliminate the introduction of sample bias.
The potential contaminant of concern at the Harney Lane
Landfill is typical non-hazardous landfill leachate;
characterized by high-dissolved solids and slightly acidic
conditions . Monitoring over the last four years at the site
appears to substantiate a Regional Board conclusion that the
probability of the landfill causing degradation of the ground
water is relatively remote. None of the wells used for
monitoring have shown any indication of ground water degradation.
In addition, there is no reason at this time to suspect the
presence of any hazardous organic contaminates in the waste which
would justify concern for the use of PVC as a monitoring well
material . Therefore, the monitoring well at these facilities
will employ PVC casing.
WATER QUALITY SAMPLING
Cross contamination of samples can occur if proper equipment
techniques and procedures are not followed, particularly when a
single pump is used. therefore, to prevent potential
contamination of samples and to facilitate collection of water
samples on a long term basis, it is proposed that electric
submersible pumps be installed in the wells. There are a number
of economically available pumps for dedicated installation. The
pump diameter should be in the 3- to 4-inch range and be capable
of a minimum 6 gal/min flow from 100 feet. A dedicated pump,
such as a Brainard/Kilman TriLoc Float Pump, a QED Well Wizard,
or equivalent, should be used. Actual pump selection will be
made during the monitoring well installation phase. The pumps
can be set up for direct on-demand electrical connection or
equipped with plug fixtures for use with a portable electric
generator. - -
