Interested Parties -2 - 13 March 2012
Former Vernalis Pump Station and
Historical Crude Oil Pipelines
According to the HHSE report, exposure to residual crude oil chemicals present in soil was determined
to be 1 E-06 which is equivalent to the US Environmental Protection Agency threshold lifetime de
minimus cancer risk of 1 E-06. This value indicates an acceptable cancer risk for exposure to onsite
soils for a hypothetical future resident under those Site conditions evaluated. In addition, future
potential non-cancer health hazards from direct contact and indirect inhalation exposure to onsite soils,
and the non-cancer hazards for individual chemicals of potential concern (COPCs), were estimated.
The results were summed and the aggregate non-cancer health hazard for oral, dermal, and inhalation
exposure to onsite soils and non-cancer hazards from subsurface vapor intrusion was estimated to be
3E-03, well below the acceptable non-cancer hazard index of 1. Residual concentrations of crude oil
remaining at the Site will naturally degrade with time, likely over several years.
Chevron submitted a Soil and Groundwater Management Plan, dated 13 October 2011, which
documents site conditions and serves as guideline to implement in the event that petroleum
hydrocarbons, attributable to the historical pipelines and/or pump station, are encountered during future
Site activities.
Details of the former Vernalis Pump Station site assessments are available to interested parties through
the GeoTracker website (https://geotracker.waterboards.ca.gov/search.asp) case number
SL0607749833 and in the Central Valley Water Board project files.
Interested parties with questions and/or comments regarding the proposed closure can provide written
comments, or contact Dean Hubbard at the above address, by email: dhubbard(a-)waterboards.ca.gov,
or by telephone at (559) 445-5179 by 13 April 2012.
