5.2 Physical Hazards <br /> Table 2 shown below describes potential hazards and their associated required safety measures. <br /> TABLE 2 <br /> POTENTIAL REQUIRED SAFETY MEASURES <br /> HAZARDS <br /> Fire Open flame or tobacco smoking will be strictly prohibited in the <br /> work area. Fire extinguisher will be readily available. <br /> Equipment will be shut down during refueling. <br /> Head Injury Hard Hats will be worn. <br /> Eye Injury Safety glasses with side shields will be worn around moving <br /> machinery, during sampling operations, and in any eye hazard <br /> work areas. <br /> Foot Injury Safety Shoes with steel toes and shanks will be worn. <br /> Noise Ear plugs and/or noise mufflers will be worn whenever loud <br /> machinery is in use. <br /> Inhalation Appropriate respiratory protective equipment will be used, as <br /> directed by the Health and Safety Officer. <br /> Slips and Falls Appropriate warning signs will be posted, wherever this danger <br /> exists. When possible, hazards will be marked with bright <br /> colored flagging or paint. <br /> Utilities Location of all underground utilities will identified, mapped, <br /> and marked. All aerial utilities will be identified and mapped. <br /> A site map with all utilities will be provided. <br /> Extremity Injury Guards will be required, when possible, on all moving parts, <br /> belts, and pulleys. <br /> 5.3 Exposure Hazards <br /> 5.3.1 Heat and Cold Stress <br /> Heat stress and its associated complications is one of the most prevalent health concerns on <br /> hazardous waste sites, especially when protective clothing is being used. When heat stress <br /> conditions may exist all workers shall be encouraged to ingest additional fluids, which will be <br /> readily available on-site. Under high temperature conditions or where level C or higher <br /> protection is required, a work/rest schedule shall be instituted. <br /> Cold stress and associated complications occur during periods of low temperature and/or high <br /> wind chill conditions.
