APPENDIX E
The purpose of the Health and Safety Plan is to provide guidelines to protect on-site workers and the public
during the field activities and part of the site investigation. Copies of this plan will be available on-site at all
times during field activities. The station is fenced and secured by a locked gate. During field activities, the
area being investigated will be kept restricted from any persons not involved in the study. Compounds
suspected to be present at the site include petroleum hydrocarbons and glycol.
Air monitoring will be the principle means of determining necessary levels of personal protection and other
health and safety precautions. An instrument capable of performing photoionization analysis of volatile
organic vapors (photovac TIP 1 calibrated to isobutylene ) will be used to monitor total organic vapor
concentrations in the air in the breathing area near each borehole and monitoring well. Action levels for
organic vapors are as follows:
Concentration above background Action Required
less than 20 ppm No action.
greater than 20 ppm Personnel within work area must use a respirator with organic vapor
cartridges.
greater than 1000 ppm Activities shall be stopped, borehole covered, and equipment
removed.
In addition to the above precautions, the following will be observed at all times:
1. There will be no eating, drinking, or smoking in the work area.
2. Protective clothing will consist, at a minimum, of boots, hard hats, and appropriate gloves. The type of
equipment used and the overall level of protection will be reevaluated periodically as the amount of
information about the site increases, and as workers are required to perform different tasks.
3. All disposable clothing and plastic sheeting used during the operations will either be contained on-site
or removed to an approved off-site disposal facility approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.
462891/42/PPU26 E-1
